What we believe

 
God can be known by all who seek him. However, we must be careful to know Him as He defines Himself, not as we imagine Him to be.
The following beliefs are essential to our understanding God, and our relationship with Him is what leads us to gather in worship and take His good news to others.

We Believe the Bible is the inspired Word of God and the final authority for all matters of faith.

We Believe that marriage is an institution sanctioned by God and joins one man and one woman in a single exclusive union, as delineated in scripture.

We Believe that man, created by God, willfully sinned, and as a result, is lost and without hope apart from Jesus Christ.

We Believe salvation (the forgiveness of sins) comes by grace through the blood of Jesus Christ (His death on the cross).

Chris Butler
Senior Minister

 
 
A native of Berkeley County, Chris held ministries in NC and VA after graduating from Mid-Atlantic Christian University with a Bachelors of Science in biblical studies. He returned home 20 years ago to lead the Martinsburg Church of Christ. Chris is passionate about his relationship with Jesus Christ and growing the church. He and his wife Melissa have 3 sons and a border collie. They enjoy family time, traveling and are active in Special Olympics.
 
 
 

 

Scott Funkhouser
Associate Minister

 
 
Scott joined the staff of the Martinsburg Church of Christ as an associate minister after serving 20 years with the Martinsburg Police Department. Growing up in Cumberland, MD, Scott was always active in church and church camp. After graduating from Allegheny College of Maryland, Scott moved to Martinsburg in 2000, where he currently resides with his wife and 2 children. He is excited to serve God through his passion for music, youth, and the church.
 
 
 

Our History

 

1970s

God gave a group of fifty-four people a vision for a new church in Martinsburg, WV, that would follow the pattern and principles laid out by the first-century church. On October 2nd, 1977, in the basement of Mr. and Mrs. Douglas Yontz, at 915 Florida Avenue, these fifty-four people met together for the first time as a new church. Later that month on the 23rd, the Martinsburg Church of Christ met at the Presbyterian Church Hall (8854 Tuscarora Pike) because the basement of Mr. and Mrs. Yontz became too small for the growing weekly attendance. By 1979, the church had grown to a record attendance of one-hundred eight. In the same year, the church purchased five acres of land on Tuscarora Pike just a mile down the road.
 

 

1980s

The groundbreaking service for the new building was held in the summer of 1982. Remarkably, construction of the building was completed in just a week’s time with the help of the Mount Carmel Church Builders from Stone Mountain, Georgia, along with many local church and community members. As the years have passed, God has blessed our faithfulness by adding to our number. However, we recognize the church culture has changed from a population who grew up recognizing the role of the church in life to a population who question the relevance of the church in the larger society. The church body was once composed of individuals who grew up in families and communities who attended weekly services, to the body now being a mix of those with traditional values and those seeking an understanding of the purpose of religion in their life. To adapt to these needs, our new building will reflect the change from a single-use to a multi-use facility. We plan to be a location where members of the community can gather, whether it’s a communal meal following a funeral, hosting classes, or a local basketball tournament. It will also be where we meet as a body for worship and education.
